Marine Institute Tour and the Launch facility

We kicked off the second week with an exciting tour to the Marine Institute and the Launch facility in Holyrood. The highlights of the tour included hands-on experience controlling a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), exploring various machinery that can crush sea ice, and witnessing the impressive flume tank in action. Did you know that the flume tank at the Marine Institute holds 1.7 million liters of water and can simulate currents of varying speeds?

At the Launch facility, we were amazed by the array of ROVs, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), and machinery designed to test their sea ice-crushing capabilities. This tour was truly fascinating showcasing the diverse career paths available in this field, including marine engineering, nautical science, marine environmental science, naval architecture, and more. We left with a newfound appreciation for the innovative work being done in this industry

MUN Med, NRC Tour and Faculty of Science

We had the opportunity to participate in three exciting tours: the MUN School of Medicine, the NRC, and the Science buildings. At the Med school, we discovered the various tools used to teach and prepare medical students for real-life scenarios. I was particularly fascinated by the plastination room, where specimens are preserved in incredible detail. Next, we visited the NRC, where we explored test tanks, ship models, and even braved the cold room at -20°C! .

We finished off the week with a tour of science buildings. Our first stop was at the Biology and Biochemistry department, where we delved into DNA analysis. We also visited the Psychology lab, gaining insight into the latest research in the field. We then moved on to the Physics department, where we participated in a captivating demonstration that allowed us to calculate the speed of light. Finally, we explored the Computer Science department, discovering the latest advancements in the field. This tour provided a unique opportunity to experience the diversity of scientific inquiry and exploration within the Faculty of Science.”

Port of Argentia and the Engineering tour

This week we went to the Port of Argentia where we were able to see the massive monopiles as well as the the structure under construction for the White Rose Project even though the weather was a bit foggy. The week following that, WISE embarked on a fascinating tour of the Faculty of Engineering and the Process Engineering building. One of the highlights was learning about the innovative research on cultivating bacteria that feed on oil, which aids in cleaning up oil spills. We also had the opportunity to explore the various labs within the engineering building, including the Hydraulics and Fluids lab, where we participated in hands-on activities and experiments. And, who knew that engineering played a role in our daily cup of coffee? We also learned about the engineering behind coffee making, which was a delightful surprise. Additionally, we visited other impressive facilities such as the Student Hub and Machine Shop, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the engineering faculty’s resources and capabilities.
